Home QTH: 7010 Lawler Ridge, Houston, Texas 77055 USA - Harris County - Maidenhead Grid Square EL29gt Club Information: The Jake McClain Driver Memorial Amateur Radio Club KC5WXA was founded February 1, 2010. The goals of the Club are to memorialize Jake’s amateur radio interests and enthusiasm, and to honor him by promoting amateur radio to the general public as a hobby and emergency communications resource. The club has members in Texas, Tennessee, Louisiana and Ohio. Jake, KC5WXA, was an avid General Class amateur radio operator in Houston, Texas. At the time of his death at age 26 in May 2009 he was studying for an Extra Class license. The club accomplishes its goals by Mentoring New Amateur Radio Operators, Participating in Amateur Radio Contests, Promoting Amateur Radio Through Public Relations, and Other Activities that Promote Amateur Radio. We are proud to be an Affiliated Club of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL). Jake McClain Driver KC5WXA: Jake was first licensed in November 1996 at age 13 when he received his Technician Class license. He immediately got a Yaesu FT-50 VHF/UHF handy talkie and was on the air. Over the years he acquired a Yaesu VX-5 VHF/UHF handy talkie and Icom 207 VHF/UHF mobile rig. He got a Yaesu FT-857 HF/VHF/UHF rig when he received his General class license in July 2007. He had vertical, ground plane and dipole antennas. One of his favorite pieces of equipment was a Vectronics 20 meter CW QRP transceiver which he built himself. Jake liked to "hang out" on the 146.92 repeater in Houston, Texas and would often be heard having QSOs on the Salt Grass linked system. He also enjoyed the short wave ham bands and maintained a meticulous log. He was a member of the ARRL, AMSAT and the Brazos Valley Amateur Radio Club. Club Activities: One purpose of the club is to mentor people who would like to get an amateur radio license. If you are interested in one-on-one mentoring to get an amateur license, please contact us. Members of our club chase DX and participate in most ARRL and CQ HF DX contests. The club has received the ARRL DXCC Mixed and CW Awards. KC5WXA ARRL Annual Scholarship: The club, through the ARRL Foundation Scholarship Program, provides a $1000 scholarship each year to a graduating high school senior who is a licensed amateur radio operator. DXpedition Support: The club has donated over $5000 to DX-peditons. For additional information about our club please contact us at KC5WXA@gmail.com. Thank you for reading about our club and 73.
