The Green Mountain Wireless Society was founded in December of 1980 by a small group of Amateur Radio Operators in Rutland County, Vermont. The club was formed as a general interest radio club, while several members also began building a repeater to cover the local valley.

GMWS publishes a monthly newsletter, Key Klicks. The club has operated Field Day and some special events such as the Coolidge Memorial from Plymouth State Park, Walk America, Boy Scout Jamboree on the Air, as well as RACES and ARES events. The GMWS has sponsored Novice/Tech courses and regular VE sessions.
