ARLS009 Shuttle carries two hams

Launch of the Space Shuttle Atlantis occurred on Friday, June 27,
1995 at 1932 UTC. The mission, designated STS-71, carries the
Shuttle Amateur Radio EXperiment or SAREX. Amateur Radio-licensed
astronauts Ellen S. Baker, KB5SIX and Charlie Precourt, KB5YSQ will
operate a 2-meter FM voice radio to make contacts with amateurs and
student groups. This same radio will also facilitate a rendezvous
and docking with the Russian Space Station Mir. Docking will occur
approximately 2 days after launch, and separation is scheduled
approximately 7 days after launch. Most SAREX activities are
planned for after the shuttle and space station separate. Keep
posted to W1AW for possible operating times and Keplerian elements.
