2011 ARRL Field Day
Field Day was, once again, a great time. For the third year in a row, I operated from the Garland Prairie Vista picnic ground in the Kaibab National Forest, about 20 miles/32km west of Flagstaff along old US-66 in northern Arizona. I worked HF, 6m, 2m, and satellites. As I have done for the past few years, WD9EWK operated as a 1B/1-op/battery station transmitting at 5W.
I logged fewer QSOs than last year, but had as much fun in the forest. I even set up and made my first transmissions through AO-7 in "mode A" (2m up, 10m down). My best 6m QSO was with a group in Ontario, and HF QSOs all over North America. I worked a group on 2m FM simplex that was on Mingus Mountain, a mountain about 40 miles/64km south of me, using an HT (not on 146.520 MHz). Not only did we exchange our information, we had a nice chat. On the satellites, I logged QSOs on 3 satellites (AO-27, FO-29, AO-51) and attempted to make QSOs on the others.
I posted a short video showing my radios and antennas used for Field Day 2011, at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8BGbDVBXTA
This Field Day was the 10th consecutive Field Day I operated away from home, and the 6th where I worked satellites. I always try to make time to work Field Day every summer, so I expect that I will be on the air from somewhere in late June 2012.
73!
