2012 ARRL Field Day
This year's field day was close to perfect with only some minor problems such as a useless antenna. One good thing was that we tried running on a small battery, a Pb battery intended for a garden tractor. We managed to run all the 24 hours without need to switch to the car battery we normally use. Some small problems with broken parts delayed the erection of the main antenna support but the rest ran liked it was rehearsed.
We used one 48 feet, glass-fiber "stick" put together of 13 US-army tent pins ant 2 30 feet Swedish army aluminum "sticks". It yealded a "path", 30 feet at the ends and 48 feet in the center. Good for a dipol or whatever you like. We found a LW working the best. 100 feet up in the air and 70 feet back to our radio tent. Worked like a charm.
The Barker&Williamson antenna was a disapointment. Yes, it works on all bands but equally bad. Replaced with 170 feet of 14awg and a homebrowed antenna tuner gave a lot better result even if you have to tune every time you change frequency.
See (hear) you next year,
