2012 ARRL Field Day
This year for Field Day, my brother Justin (NE5JK) came to STX to operate - the first time we've ever done FD together! My main rig was inoperable, and the rig that Justin brought was also not working; so, in the spirit of the event, we set up a Racal TRA-931X military radio that a friend of Justin's had brought back from Iraq. We had to bodge a cable between the voltage converter (lower box) and the transciever, and another for the external speaker. Power was from a high-output UPS battery - the Racal draws so little current at 20w that we never budged the voltage! We made 39 QSOs despite our late start, and with the help of the 135' doublet at 30 feet we were able to make contacts with stations in Hawaii, British Columbia, and Rhode Island among others. We had a really great time, and the only thing I missed was operating CW, since the Racal only does A2 (modulated 1000Hz tone) which is not legal in our ITU region below 50MHz. Hopefully by next year I'll have a K2 for CW ;)
73 from Jeff (NZ5G) and Justin (NE5JK)!
