2012 ARRL Field Day
KY4KY - Bullitt Amateur Radio Society, Bullitt County, Kentucky
KY4KY (2F KY) had another great outing for the 2012 ARRL Field Day event. I will comment on the CW station and its activities due to having been the captain of the CW station.
Set-up began around 0645 local time with the arrival of the 26ft travel-trailer, courtesy of Ralph W4HK. Our location was a field adjacent to the Pioneer Village (KY) City Hall & Police station. Shortly following my arrival at 0730 local time, the process of antenna assembly began. Once the coax runs were properly calculated and in place, assembly of the actual antennas began. The Hustler 4BTV was up and in place in approximately 30 minutes. Ralph W4HK and I had the 33 ft. assembly for the 80m dipole completed by 0900 local time. Following the arrival of Darryl WA4CAQ, we were able to assemble the TA-33 3-element tri-bander and begin the process of raising it to a level of about 25 feet. The beam was an addition from last year (courtesy W4HK), and was worth the effort....It played very well!!
As 1800z approached, the generator was started, the AC in the camper began to flow, and the final checks of the interfaced computers to the SSB & VHF stations were completed.
Operating conditions were good, with 20m and 15m being the goto bands in the early going. 10m seemed to be in very poor shape, with the band checked regularly for any activity. The overnite hours produced the best runs of the event. 80m between 0600z and 1100z was absolutely magical. We were able to get on one frequency and hold it for the that entire period!
The late morning of the second day continued to find 20m and 15m the bands to milk for those much needed QSOs. Again....10m was dead! I believe we worked only a handful of stations on 10 for the entire period.
After it was all said and done....
CW-1074 Q's
SSB-445 Q's
GOTA-34 Q's
CW Station operators:
KE4KY Glenn, KC4WQ Buddy, NM4K Bill, N4XM Paul
Without the support of WA4CAQ Darryl & W4HK Ralph this event would not have been as successful as it was...Thanks Guys!!
We improved our CW count over last year by about 60 Q's, Our goal for 2013 is....1100 CW QSO's.
