2006 ARRL Field Day

07/07/2006 | KU6S 5A EAST BAY KG6THI GOTA STATION
South Bay Amateur Radio Association (SBARA) operated from Central Park, at Fremont, California using the clubs call sign KU6S. SBARA operated stations on 2M CW and SSB, 6M SSB, 15M GOTA, 20M PSK31, CW & SSB, 40M CW & SSB and during the wee hours Sunday morning, 80M CW & SSB stations.

Over the Field Day weekend there was an exhibit in Central Park on the Hayward Earthquake Fault that passes through Fremont and cuts through the park. The exhibit consisted of a trench that you would travel down underground to view the fault-line fracture from the 1868 earthquake that destroyed Mission San Jose and many of the structures in the area. On Field Day weekend over 700 people visited the exhibit and the docents directed those interested to visit SBARAs emergency communications exercise taking place adjacent to the exhibit.

For the first time we had elected officials visit our Field Day site. Fremont Vice Mayor Steven Cho and Council Member Anu Natarajan both showed interest in amateur radios role in an emergency. Vice Mayor Cho called CQ using the GOTA station and invited SBARA to participate later in the year at the 50-year anniversary celebration for the city.

As always, one of the highlights was the Saturday afternoon barbeque with Harry Lau KF6QAK and his team doing a great job. SBARA member Lloyd Hartshorn N6DOK won the K2 Tranceiver raffle. Go to http://www.sbara.org/ to see Andy Romeril KG6MDS, SBARA President, presenting Lloyd the raffle prize. -- WT6K
