2006 ARRL Field Day

07/01/2006 | N7R By Don Webb (ka7l)

Last weekend was Field Day for the world wide Amateur Radio Operators, (HAMS).

The purpose of this annual event is to simulate emergency conditions that might follow a regional disaster and to be ready to provide emergency communication till normal services can be restored.

The Lake Chelan Radio Club set up their emergency equipment this year high upon Union Valley where a cabin was made available to them.

The local participants this year set their particular requirements stricter than the majority of the HAMS. They decided to do their operations totally from batteries, CW and QRP. What this means is that they are totally independent of the commercial power lines. This also means that they did all their communicating using code,(no voice transmissions) and the transmitter power limits of only 5 watts. The latter allows for the battery operations to last longer.

Each group of radio operators in a particular site work within specific guidelines and when finished, submit their operating logs to the American Radio Relay League, (ARRL) for final scoring and grading.

The particular operating conditions the Chelan club chose will give them a multiplier point of five for each contact they made. This means though they would not have made as many contacts an another group using much higher power, and more sophisticated equipment. They should score well in the overall standings.

The two operators shown here are Peter Stutz, AA7T with headphones on and Doug Berry K7SMW in yellow shirt. -- N7R
