2006 ARRL Field Day

06/28/2006 | VE7VCT The Vancouver Emergency Community Telecommunications ORganization (VECTOR), based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada (and call sign VE7VCT) competed in Field Day as a 3BC station. Some of the VECTOR members carried out an alternative power demonstration and a satellite QSO.

Alternative power was achieved using two modes. The first mode involved the use of a 20W 12V solar panel. The second involved the use of a hand-wound batter charger, surplus from the UK MOD Clansman radio system. In both cases an HTX-202 was used at low power, without battery (since it no longer holds a charge). Successful QSOs were made by VA7VIJ and VA7FII (both under 18) with VE7IEJ and others. The picture shows refueling of the hand-generator with watermelon and the solar panel catching rays (like everyone).

In addition satellite QSOs were made by VE7DOH, VE7CNV and VA7IMR, using a home-brewed satellite antenna, constructed of a bamboo stake and multiple elements obtained from five coat hangers. VA7IMR and VE7CNV are shown in the second picture.

VECTOR carried out many other activities during the weekend, including the coordination of an ESS exercise and liaison with firefighters, ambulance and military personnel. Erection of antennas was at times perilous, but many contacts were made in the course of the weekend. In addition VECTOR tested out its new emergency command post vehicle. For more information on VECTOR see: http://www.city.vancouver.bc.ca/police/OpsSupp/eops/vector/ .

Overall a fun and amusing weekend. -- VA7IMR
