2006 ARRL June VHF Contest
We operated from Brockway Mountain which is about 750 feet above the small town of Copper Harbor. We set up at the gift shop and were graciously hosted by the owner. The view is a 3 sided view of Lake Superior, followed by a spectacular view of the mountains of EN 67 behind us.
We set up on a plastic picnic table and two lawn chairs, being at the mercy of whatever mother nature was about the throw at us. The only 'problem' we ran into was that we were very popular so fielding about 10,000 questions cut into our operating activities. First off, we weren't able to actually start operating until 2 hours of the contest had passed. We certainly made a handful of new friends, including W8LON/Rover who stopped by for a couple hour visit.
The weather conditions were quite cool for a couple of guys that like it warm. The highest temperature we saw was 51 degrees and the windchill definately brought it down into the 40's. Even though the bands were still hopping by 9 p.m. local time, we could no longer take the cold and decided it was time to break down and head back to the camper.
We operated on 6m/2m/1.25m/70cm. I felt bad for Scott who worked his tail off building a 222 transverter for the contest and he didn't make one contact. Everything tests good on the transverter still, so we're hoping the state of no contacts was because of our chosen location.
All-in-all we had a rough score of a little over 22,000 with 99 grids activated. We once again proved the EN67 is a popular grid to activate and is apparently quire rare as my mailbox has been stuffed with QSL requests! -- KB9IQR
