2006 ARRL International DX Contest (Phone)

03/07/2006 | W6RCL Enjoyed the contest --- even though 20M on Sunday was a ZOO!

I had 314 Q's with something like 257 different stations worked. What was amazing to me was the power used by those I contacted. It AVERAGED 820 WATTS!!! I worked fewer than one percent QRP! Would you believe 190 of the 257 different stations I worked said they were using 1 KW? Although, the Italians (who reported running 500 W or less) were louder and seemed to OPEN and CLOSE the band!!!!

Some firsts for me: First contest in which I worked almost twice as
many Europeans as Japanese. First contest in which I worked 90 DXCC
countries. First contest in which I worked more countries on 80M
with 1/8th wave vertical than on 10M with a Yagi at 50 feet!!

For anyone who doubts there is an EAST COAST advantage -- consider this: I was able to work ONLY two EA's (Spain) on 15M because the band barely opened between Los Angeles and Europe -- yet I could hear stations in the East and Midwest working Europe <> for a long time before the band opened in the West.
