2006 ARRL Straight Key Night

01/06/2006 | AD5MU This year was my first SKN and I had a blast. I used a brand new Bencher Key (matches the paddles that I've used for several years). I got the new key a couple of days before the event and discovered that I really needed the practice before the event. There were some really excellent Fists pounding the brass and the 12 contacts (on 40M and 80M) that I made were most pleasurable to copy. I especially enjoyed hearing that I was the first contact of 2006 during a few of the QSOs. The sounds of CW pouring into the shack here in Colorado were nothing short of musical. Most notable was AB5X, Chuck from Texas. Not only did he adjust his speed exactly to mine with precision spacing and a good clear sig, but the qso content was very interesting. Not every day that a fellow HAM enjoys QSO with the last certified Navy Speed Key Operator. It is always nice to capture a bit of history from our hobby and I can't think of a better way than SKN. I look forward to SKN this coming 1 Jan 2007. -- AD5MU
