2006 ARRL Straight Key Night

01/04/2006 | KB1LZH I was astonished at how much I enjoyed straight key night (SKN). This was my best ham radio experience since I re-joined the hobby last February.

Just listening to some of my new ham friends talking about the equipment they were using made me long for some vintage equipment. For next year, I hope to find a nice old receiver to compliment my EICO 720. I'll be ready.

This year, it was my old ICOM and my Kent key. (I didn't have to dust it off, you know. It's the only thing I use.)

The conversations were about 30 minutes each and it was a pleasure to spend some time with each new friend. I am honored to be a ham and I would like to personally thank each contact for taking the time to chat.

Best fist I heard was my very first contact, WD8BAH, Clarence. The most interesting QSO was my second contact, W8JZI. Thanks guys!

As excited as I was, my XYL was just as excited. She enjoys listening to the tones and seeing me bang on the Kent. We didn't stay up all night but we made 11 contacts and had great fun. Can't wait for next year.

One sour note: about 3 days after, I started to notice some cramping in my right wrist. Occupational hazzard??? -- KB1LZH
