2005 ARRL November Sweepstakes (CW)

11/09/2005 | W8ID Wow, another great time with our Seneca Radio Club W8ID station set up at the Seneca County Public Safety Building in Tiffin, OH!

Only four operators (WB8REI, KF8GD, K8ARL and Tom Perkins) for CW this year but that just meant more food for each of us. Jeff, WB8REI, came through with a buffet of items to keep us nourished for the two days. Twenty-four ham sandwiches, two dozen cookies, baked beans, chips, salsa, coffee and pop between three operators (sorry, Tom, you got there too late). Yummy! Food certainly helped our score.

WB8REI always has something to remember the event by. This year Linda, his XYL, created a one-of-a-kind T-shirt. It is all hand-drawn (see photo). He also wanted us to remember the last time our club had a Clean Sweep. If you look closely, the mug on the operating table is a Clean Sweep mug from 1995 (phone).

I, K8ARL, tried to keep everyone on track and shooting for the gold. Unfortunately, everyone wimps out in the end and they try to justify going home when there are still two hours remaining for the Sweepstakes. Chuck, KF8GD, did manage to humor me by sticking around the longest and working an additional eight hard-to-get stations.

KF8GD also managed to put up with my contest humor. The fast CW operators leave me in their wake. I would watch for the others to see when they would be struggling as much as I was to catch the exchange. When I knew they were somewhat "stumped" I would say, "Oh, that was easy. It's W1AW Five Nine Nine." Finally after a number of those Chuck turned to me and said, "That's not a valid exchange. They have to give their precedence, year and section." I just grinned and waited for the next time to say "W1AW Five Nine Nine."

Well, I have to practice my different voices so we can participate in the Sweepstakes phone portion. You see, I have been acting a lot in mystery theatre this year. One of my specialties is creating unique character voices. Everybody is still talking about the vampire voice I used when checking into all of the nets over Halloween. Listen closely. You never know who you might hear on W8ID.

Lot's of fun!

73,
K8arl -- K8ARL
