2005 IARU HF World Championships

07/14/2005 | YI9VCQ Conditions were excellent for this contest. My only problem was a lack of a good low-band antenna. To have one might have made me more competitive.

German and Italian stations normally plaster me with calls, but they were quite weak this time. Asian operators came rolling in during the first hours on 15 meters. Several new entities were added to the log such as Vatican, Tanzania, Nepal, and Honduras. They aren't "rare ones" but were a thrill to me.

A45WB was outstandingly loud as usual. I also found K3WW for my first of 14 contacts with the USA. Chas is an excellent CW op and a good friend. His signal came in at S5 and stayed strong for several hours.

I was able to run during most of the contest and rates were very good. It's quite a thrill to run using only 100-watts and a 20-meter dipole facing E/W.

The real fun was running no slower than 35wpm for the entire contest. High speed CW is so much fun. I still marvel at the ops who never miss my call even at 45wpm. Simply amazing!

This should have been my last major contest from YI-land. My eternal thanks to all the A-1 operators from around the world who have made my time here memorable.

73 and God Bless,

Korey
