2005 ARRL Field Day
The members of this group have participated, in ARRL Field Day, in varying configurations since 1978. It all started in western Pennsylvania using Paul's call: W3HGT. We've used it ever since in three different states, NC, PA, TX. We're all retired now so we operate '1E' and leave the 'field work' to the younger hams. We feel we've paid our dues and came to the unanimous conclusion we would rather operate and eat than put up antennas and swat bugs.
Don't think just because we're old we aren't competitive. The generator started running about an hour before start time and we were on the air the full legal time. This year we logged 1,068 QSOs (312 CW, 756 SSB).
At some time during our careers we all lived in Pittsburgh, PA, four native Pittsburghers and one from Ohio who passed through. Now we live in four different states with only one still in the Pittsburgh area. We have a daily morning schedule on 40 meters and hook up Sunday and Wednesday evenings on 20 meters, conditions permitting. Field Day gives us a chance to get together in person.
This year the participants and their additional assigned duties follow:
KA3AIN (2001 Host, Little Switzerland, NC) - Brew master
W3GQ (2002, 2003 Host, Lake Norman, Terrell, NC)- Computer/Information Specialist. Since he's the only one of us that is not retired from IBM he actually likes computers.
W3HGT (2004 Host, Fayette County, PA) - Pianist and brass pounder.
WB3AAC (Hopefully 2006 Host at his new QTH in Tennessee. Previously Minong, WI.) - In charge of ice
K5AEM (2005 Host, Georgetown, TX) - Chief cook and bartender
You may be wondering why we call ourselves 'The 570-V Connection'. At one time we all had Kenwood TS-570s. Now, two of the group have Yaesu Mark V Field - FT1000 transceivers.
C U next year. Lord willing and the pension checks keep coming.
On behalf of Talley, Paul (Bubba), Paul (Sonny), and Rich,
de Jon -- K5AEM
