2005 ARRL Field Day

07/09/2005 | KC0AHN The Boeing Employees Amateur Radio Society of Wichita, KS held their field day at the Trustee's (Bob and Mary Jo Bailey) ranch in Moundridge, KS. The Bailey's have generously allowed us to use their ranch as a backdrop for Field Day for nine years now. We decreased our entry from 4A to 3A to allow for bottom of the sunspot cycle poor propagation and to avoid inter-radio interference. Surprisingly, we made a substantial number of contacts perhaps higher than the point total from previous years. Id like to thank a VERY active club membership for making this a stand-out year. Special thanks go to our station captains and particularly James Whitfield (N5GUI), our club president, for his assistance in field day planning and preparation during a particularly difficult time in my life.

28 club members and friends participated in the BEARS 2005 field day this year we increased participation, even with a number of key absences from our usual field day operation. Our Field Day stations: 40m station captained by James Whitfield (N5GUI) Yaesu FT-1000MP to an inverted V at 25 feet, 20m station captained by Steve Canfield (KC0GAA) - ICOM 756 Pro II to a vertical mounted at 10 feet, 10/15/80m station captained by Jim Enix (KC0QIE) - Yaesu FT-990 to a DX-LB plus (102 feet long) mounted as an inverted V peaking at 30 feet. Our GOTA station captained by Harvey Jones (KC0TEE) - Yaesu FT-857 to a DXEE antenna mounted at 30 feet and perpendicular to the other field day multi-band dipole. The GOTA crew included the following teammates: Samantha Wing (KC0MTM), Haley Canfield, Rachel Enix, and Ryan Lanier.

Of special note: Jim Enix (KC0QIE), Harvey Jones (KC0TEE), and Ron Wing (KC0MVP) worked all night on 40m and 20m. Ron Wing (brother of Randy Wing (N0LD) has traveled from Iowa for three separate field days!
We had a wonderful barbecue lunch and dinner prepared by Don Urban and Don Thomas Every year they seem to get better and better. Don Thomas prepared a breakfast on Saturday AND Sunday mornings that saved everyone a lot of trouble and was quite tasty thanks!

Club members Bill Briles (W0OQC), Nick Farlow (KB0YHT), Dennis Gaskill (KC0IFQ), John Harford (KB0OPH), Joe Johnson (N0KTA), Dave Powers (KA0KCI), and Jim Williams (K5NN) were sorely missed this year! Bill was vacationing in Alaska, Nick was attending a wedding, Dennis was recovering from surgery, John was working with boy scouts, Joe and Dave were on vacation, and Jim was in Washington State on business.
Because of absences, we didnt have a field day satellite station this year we also missed Greg Wycoff (N0ZHE) a Satellite station regular with Bill Briles (W0OQC) and Joe Johnson (N0KTA).

The KC0AHN 2005 Field Day crew included: Bob Bailey (KA0MR), Mary Jo Bailey, Erica Bailey, Steve Canfield (KC0GAA), Haley Canfield, Jerrod Crane (KB0YHS), John Dickerson (KA0MOW), Jim Enix (KC0QIE), Rachel Enix, Denys Frederickson (W0BMW), William Garrison (WD0BRI), Terry Gattis (K5VWO), Steve Heyroth (K5MNZ), Harvey Jones (KC0TEE), Ryan Lanier, Jay Lies (KZ0P), Dexter Schnebly (KB0YWM), Steve Schroeder (KA0YBN), Don Thomas (W0PEA), Mrs. Thomas, Don Urban (KC0BVX), Lloyd Williams (KC0HZR), James Whitfield (N5GUI), Benjamin Wing, Randy Wing (N0LD), Ron Wing (KC0MVP), Samantha Wing (KC0MTM), and a balloonist/ham radio operator friend of Don Urban - Bruce Skachs.
