2004 ARRL Field Day

07/06/2004 | KU9Z This year a small band of us decided to split from the big club efforts and rough it a bit! Thanks to the Frazel family for allowing us to operate from their beautiful farm location in Hesston, IN. A three hour drive from Chicago, it proved to be just what we were looking for; a great location with trees, open spaces, great scenery, and most importantly a place for Gary (KC4VNU) to launch his Powered ParaGlider!

Due to Medical Murphy it went from a 4 person operation to 2 persons (KC4VNU, KU9Z), but that didn't dampen our enthusiasm. This was probably the most fun I've had in Field Day in 10 years or more. We didn't break any records, but we made some new friends and re-kindled some excitement. I think I might finally have the contest bug nibbling on Gary!

We ran KU9Z 1B IN and had a blast. We also took time out to enjoy the area and introduce some younger visitors to Ham Radio. They especially loved getting on the air and even working RA1ISS and hearing NA1ISS. One of the weekend highlights was KC4VNU flying the friendly skies in his PPG and shooting some great pics of the site.

With any luck we'll be invited back to the same site next year! -- KU9Z
