I'm interested in trying some digital modes, but am not experienced at all. I've been licensed for a while, but primarily worked 2m/440 till uprgading to General in the fall. I'd like to find a good reference that explains things, what's needed, and how to do in an easy to understand way for someone that's better suited for simple instruction. Any suggestions???

The ARRL VHF Digital Handbook, copyright 2008, just went out of print, but is still available from book sellers--try Amazon or do a Google "shopping" search to find new copies.

You may also want to contact the ARRL Technical Coordinator or Section manager for your area--they often keep track of such activities in your area.

I am very new to amateur radio. I have been using D-Star with excellent success! I am hitting a local D-Star repeater from my front yard, that is 22 miles away, with my Icom ID-51A handheld and a rubber duck. Here's an excellent introduction to D-Star, that is free:

Dont miss out on broadband digital (1 to 100Mb/s) in the microwaves with mesh networking: www.broadband-hamnet.org (formerly known as HSMM-Mesh). Its relatively inexpensive ($0 to $50 per node, $300 to fully outfit a site with a node, enclosure, and 2 24dBi dishes) and on a good link, you can transfer the entire ARRL handbook (text, graphs, pictures, etc) in ~45 seconds.

I believe the OP was interested in operating digital on HF. The ARRL has a new book out: Work the World with JT65 and JT9
