Suggestion to add an Education forum

Hello guys and gals. I love the idea of the ARRL having forums, and I hope they get even better. One major suggestion is to put a section in the forums for "Education" or "Teachers Institute topics". Those of us in the classroom that have or sponsor radio clubs need somewhere to share ideas and/or data. Bill Richardson N5VEI |

That's an excellent suggestion. The League wanted to start the forums off slowly, adding new ones as appropriate and at a time when the involved HQ staff can dedicate extra time to helping get new forums off to a good start. Hi all, I agree with Bill N5VEI that there should be a discussion on getting "real" radio in the classroom. I'm an adjunct instructor at a technical college and it surprises me that there are NO real radio projects in the canned labs. I teach RF Communications at the undergraduate level. My solution has been to slowly add real radio construction projects (on my dime) so that the powers that be do not get too upset. Besides, the students really like them and they do tell the powers that be at survey time! We test them under my call. So, this fall I will be teaching a Technician class with the hopes of getting at least 20 students to pass their test and then I will follow that up with a General class. 73 John Garner, K4ZVO |

Thanks, Allen. I had it on my list as "Digital operation and techniques' but you are right -- computers are very much a part of that mix (although old RTTY systems did it without computers!) This is one of the reasons that we are approaching adding new forums slowly (although my enthusiasm for all this is getting hard to hold back). When I'm ready to add that one to the mix (sooner now that someone asked for it), I think it may be a good idea to float the idea on the general discussion forum and give it a couple of weeks for people to suggest specific names and perhaps even fine tune the description. For right now, I think we will stick with staff moderators, but I do intend to get some volunteers on board for moderation duty. In these forums, I expect that moderarion will be primarily by example and leadership. I am also moving towards finding volunteers to help maintain the content of various radio technology topics pages on the Technology area of the ARRL web site. So far, we have the QRP and AM page authored by volunteers, although right now, only the QRP page is directly edited. If you have any thoughts on how ARRL can improve its digital pages, especially in the ways that will help inexperienced hams learn how to use digital modes, I'm all ears as Ross Perot might say. The basic approach I am using on our pages is for most, there are a paragraph or three of introduction, followed by links to downloadable articles (ARRL and other), followed by links to other sites. For digital operation, there are plenty of good ones and although I don't want a core dump, I'd like to know that we have links to the best of the best. 73, Ed Hare, W1RFI ARRL Lab Technology forums moderator |

Hi Ed, I agree with Bill that we need a forum devoted to education. One of the best ways to grow our numbers is to enthusiastically educate and train them. We have been running Technician classes for the last three years. This has been the most satisfying experience in my 25 year involvement in ham radio. It would be awesome if we had place to share experiences and best practices. 73, Scott K2CK |
