The Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) is a crucial requirement for individuals applying for a Skilled Worker Visa in the UK. This electronic document is issued by a licensed employer who has offered you a job in an eligible occupation.

The Certificate of Sponsorship confirms your employer’s willingness to sponsor your employment in the UK and provides details about your job role, salary, and contract. Without a valid CoS, your visa application cannot proceed.

Employers must meet specific requirements to issue a CoS, including being approved by the UK Home Office as a licensed sponsor. The job offered must also meet eligibility criteria, such as being on the Shortage Occupation List or meeting minimum salary thresholds.

There are two types of CoS: "Defined" and "Undefined." Defined CoS is for applicants applying from outside the UK, while Undefined CoS is for those already in the country. Employers must apply for a CoS allocation each year and justify the need for sponsorship.

If you’re an applicant, ensure your prospective employer has provided all the necessary details in the CoS, as errors can lead to visa delays. For employers, compliance with sponsorship rules is critical to maintain their license.

A Certificate of Sponsorship is not just a formality—it’s your gateway to working legally in the UK under a Skilled Worker Visa. Proper preparation ensures a smoother visa application process and the opportunity to advance your career.

I think it’s super cool when employers help with your move, like sorting out paperwork and making the whole process smoother. It makes relocating way less scary compared to doing everything solo.

Even though I’m not planning to move for work anytime soon, I totally get how helpful that support can be, especially for someone’s first time working abroad. Relocation for work seems to be a bigger deal these days, and platforms like Layboard are picking up more of these listings. Not every job there offers relocation help, but you can definitely find some good options with a little digging.

I work alone and am a private contractor. That is by all means easier than getting to work for a company that pays you much less, taking a big chunk of your wages for social security. After all, the only question is what is ir35 and once you see how to pay taxes, etc., you will be free. After all, you can organize this social security yourself if you wish. Those companies, when hiring cleaners, oftentimes provide reduced benefits anyway, as compared to white collar staff.
