Hi, When using a vertical with radials, do the radials need to be straight? Thought about curved (arc), zig-zag, bent at 90 degree or in a circle. The goal is to use a vertical in a small space. Thank you for any comments. -73 Rob N3XUB/VK4ARC |

I don't recall studies showing a benefit to doing that. Bending antenna wires typically results in a loss of efficiency. It is hard to make something small without giving something up. There are studies that show that short straight radials are a good compromise if you use more radials. This is a practical option for a small space. https://ncjweb.com/bonus-content/k3lcmaxgainradials.pdf https://owenduffy.net/grabber/cs07/index.htm This study compared four elevated radials versus eight elevated radials. You may find the techniques involved useful for making your own comparisons. Zak Lau W1VT ARRL Senior Lab Engineer |
