I have been considering mounting a HighGain 14AVQ vertical to the top of a 65' tower to replace a beam since I'm tired of fighting tree branches getting in the way of the antenna rotating. What are your thoughts on this?

Cecil came up with this optimized vertical.

My first choice would be to hire someone to permanently clear away the offending trees. I grow roses, and they grow better if I provide them with more light. I can now grow roses in the front yard after removing two large maples. I split costs with a neighbor as one of the trees was on his property.

Alternately, I would fix the beam toward Europe, as that is where most of the DX contacts are.

Signals are likely to be 8 to 10 dB weaker on the vertical, a huge difference in signal strengths.
