I want to construct a long wire that will be able to pick up 160M as well as all below. New to this. What length wire would I need?

If you just want to receive signals, you may be able to receive signals with a 10 to 15 ft piece of wire stuck into the back of the radio. A PL-259 connector can be soldered to the wire for more reliability. It is likely to work best if it is mostly vertical and away from noise generating lights and electronics. Most radios have a high impedance input which allows the wire to act as an "active antenna" which was invented by RW Burhans.

As this site shows, the pattern of an antenna changes as the frequency changes. An engineer could design a length based on frequency and the direction of the supports, but this is never actually done, as the best frequency for shortwave constantly changes.
