I'm currently working out of my "shack" a Honda Accord with a Yaesu-857 -> ATAS-120. I like digimodes but 4 hours in the car is tuff (and tends to run down the battery) If I get a Yaesu 817 can I work digimodes out of my apartment with a hamstick or something? |

How well can you hear stations in your apartment with just a piece of wire stuck into the back of the radio--perhaps the center pin of a PL-259 if want a reliable connection? It might work if you have a wood framed building, but concrete and steel apartments are notoriously bad places to put HF antennas. You need to hear at least as well as you can mobile if you want to run QRP from indoors. Zack W1VT ARRL Senior Lab Engineer |

Well, I was figuring on something like running coax out the window to something like a hamstick. II have a ground floor wood framed apartment with a small fenced patio. |

While the digital modes like PSK31 and JT65 can be pretty efficient, you may need more power if you are using an inefficient antenna at low height to make contacts on a regular basis. But, you never know what can be done unless you give it a try. I once worked KV4AA with 4 watts to a 6 ft helical dipole sitting on a first floor radiator in Philadelphia. At the time Dick was in the Guinness book of World Records for making 48k contacts in one year. Zack W1VT |

My friend Lee KK4JSJ has earned DXCC running digital modes at QRP levels from his apartment. Check out his profile on QRZ.com. I'm sure he would be willing to share his experiences with you. |
