I'm currently studying for my Technician class ham license using the book by Gordon West. I friend recommended a baefeng radio as an inexpensive first radio such as the uv-82hp. I've read that the stock antenna's normally don't get very good reception. Where can i find information to learn how to find a good antenna to replace the stock one with when carrying the handheld around? |

Nagoya and Diamond make antennas to fit the Baofeng radios. You need an antenna with an SMA female connection. Also, beware of counterfeit Nagoya and Diamond antennas. A good antenna for this radio should cost $25 or $30. |

http://www.eham.net/reviews/products/37 This site has antenna reviews. The performance of an antenna is limited by its size--a bigger antenna works better, assuming it is properly tuned and doesn't have issues with shoddy construction. Zack Lau W1VT ARRL Senior Lab Engineer |
