Can I get power to my Yaesu FT-8900R through the automobile cigar lighter or do I have to connect directly to the battery? |

A connection directly to the battery is best--a direct connection not only reduces the chance of interference to the car's electrical system, but reduces the very real risk of damaging the electrical system via overheating. That radio uses FM or frequency modulation--while it is useful for reducing noise compared to amplitude modulation modes--it is a high duty cycle mode that greatly stresses electrical wiring. Many such plugs aren't designed to handle high current, and come with 18 AWG or thinner wire that just isn't up to the task. Zack Lau W1VT ARRL Senior Lab Engineer |
