In August 1957, Daisy and William Myers and their three children became the first Black family to move into Levittown in the Dogwood Hollow section. They endured weeks of harassment before the state intervened to protect them. Daisy Myers became known as the "Rosa Parks of the North" and a fair-housing civil rights leader. This is one of the early civil-rights fights of the era and the most nationally significant event in Levittown's history. Key dates within the event: August 15, 1957 — Governor George Leader ordered State Police to Levittown. August 20, 1957 — commonly cited as the date the family became the first African American residents. August 26, 1957 — protesters dispersed and the State Police withdrew.
