On April 4, 1977, Southern Airways DC-9 Flight 242 crashed in New Hope, Paulding County, Georgia, killing 72 people. Nine of those were on the ground. 21 people, including both flight attendants, survived. 2017 is the 40th anniversary of the crash. The New London School exploded on March 18, 1937, when a spark ignited a pocket of odorless natural gas that had leaked into the school's basement. The disaster killed more than 295 students and teachers, making it the deadliest school disaster in American history. To prevent future disasters, the Texas Legislature quickly mandated that thiols (mercaptans) be added to natural gas providing a strong odor that is now instantly and universally recognized.
