  • FN20 spot in the bank's parking lot with a visit from K3IUV/R

    01/23/2008 | K1DS/R

Despite the poor conditions, cold and football games, I kept busy in 5 grids with the rover. At least there was no precipitation this year. With all 12 bands (ABCD9EFGHIJP) working, and a route well established, I submitted my best VHF rover score of a... Read More

This contest was an interesting time. Hear in the High Plains where there is little local activity, 6m is through the years has always been the band to concentrate on. However the only thing beyond ground wave was two scatter contacts Sunday morning ... Read More

Always a treat to work so many familiar calls during this great contest.

Worked only one station in my own grid (EM50). Heard a few others but no success. I heard W2GFF on CW twice during the contest with a pretty good signal both times. Using the UP/DOWN buttons on the 706's mic, I tried answering him, but no response. ... Read More

  • Homebrew HBR-13C with band coils on top. Heath Apache TX-1 rounds off my 1967 station back on the air for SKN 2008!

    01/22/2008 | K9JM

For SKN I assembled the station that I used in 1967. Christmas in 1966 when I was 14, brought me a used Heath Apache TX-1. How Santa got down the chimney, I will never know. I rebuilt it this December 2007. My Dad, Ben WB2WBZ (SK), was studying for... Read More

  • The path up to the shack winds through the woods for about 1/2 mile. It is a good aerobic exercise to make the trip while hauling a heavy exhaust pipe and a bunch of radio gear. You can see that I am wearing a pretty good path through the snow.

My QTH is located in Southern Maine, and known for its balmy temperatures in January, coupled with light breezes. Yeah right!! It was just plain COLD and WINDY on Sunday. I had very little time to devote to the January Contest, but wanted to get on at ... Read More
