2015 ARRL Straight Key Night

01/01/2015 | NA6DX

For SKN 2015, I used my trusty old Heath HW-16 again.  But this time I had a modern VFO.  I employed my KX3 in FM mode, with a 10 dB pad on its antenna port and a series 270pf dc blocking cap [Since -90V exists on the VFO input of the HW-16, I had to protect my KX3 output FETs].  The KX3 worked great, using a 0.5W setting on the TX power.  I was able to muster 45W on 40m and 30W on 15m out of the HW's 6GE5 final.  I worked N6TCZ on 40m in the evening, and W0KU, KH6OZ and AF4MY on 15m during the day.  I have to admit the old fist is not what it used to be, but the J-38 style key didn't let me down.  As usual, I enjoyed all contacts.  This is great way to start the new hamming year.  Thanks to all that make this a wonderful tradition.
