2012 ARRL Kids Day - January

01/09/2012 | K9D

The Lakes Area Amatuer Radio Club's second annual Kids Day operating event is now in the books. I don't yet have the official numbers, but they seemed a little lower than last year, probably due to the remarkably good weather we've been having. That being said it was still a success as we did have about 50 visitors. We had 3 HF stations on the air (on 10m, 20m and  40M), one 2 meter rig and lots of fun. We had a computer setup showing the new ARRL DIY video, as well as the Katrina PSA, the Hello video, and another ARRL PSA, 2 code practice oscillators, morse/standard phonetic alphabet sheets, and tons of other information about how to become an amateur radio operator. We had one young (but experienced) operator talking to the kids about when he made contact with the ISS from his mobile, and answered a LOT of information from not only the kids, but the parents as well. We had kids as young as 4 years old make contact, and a few older people as well (they had as much fun as the kids did!)

Looking forward to doing it from a park in June and then again for our 3rd annual January event (I suspect January 6th 2013?)
