2010 ARRL Field Day

06/30/2010 | K7GO

KE4NU, K7JBB, and K7GO operated 1A as K7GO for Field Day.  We chose a somewhat remote location at 6200' elevation in the Bitterroot mountains of Montana below St. Mary's Peak.

Band conditions were somewhat poor at the start of FD but gradually improved as the day went on.  40 meters, which is generally a good FD band here, had rather mediocre performance for us with some frustrating one way propagation.  We spent most of our operating time on 80m, 20m, 15m and toward the closing hours, 10m.  It was great to have some 15m and 10m openings.  We managed 335 phone QSOs with 59 sections over the period.  Sure wish we could have gotten more east coast QSOs.

The solar panel worked great to keep the battery topped off, even at 100w output.  The propane/gas generator was a little balky at times but hung in there for the duration.

The clear weather meant it was mighty cool in the wee hours up on the mountain but the night sky with the nearly full moon was fantastic.

FD remains THE best operating event to test your logisitics and operational skills transporting, assembling and operating a remote communications station.
