2004 ARRL Field Day

07/07/2004 | WB2QBP ARC EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS SERVICE OPERATES THEIR FIELD DAY ENTRY AT PICTURESQUE COAST GUARD STATION AT EATON'S NECK

Members of the ARCES, took their annual field trip this Field Day weekend. Leaving Queens and driving through Nassau and then into Suffolk County, this group made their temporary radio installation on one of the most northern peninsulas on Long Island, Eatons Neck. With Eatons Neck lighthouse as a backdrop, ARCES used the quarters of the US Coast Guard to operate their 2 station entry. What a breathtaking view. Using a natural rise in terrain, the group set up towers and wire arrays for a very competitive FD installation. Also, the meal menu needs to be noted. Steak and shrimp was served as Saturday's dinner -- a first class feed for a first class effort. ARCECS has been active with the Queens Chapter of the American Red Cross of Greater New York since their inception in 1964.

Eatons Neck Lighthouse was built in 1799 and rises above the ground 50 feet on the same bluff that ARCES uses for Field Day. The CG Station and light continue to safeguard mariners of Long Island Sound.
