By including ARRL in your estate plans you will leave a powerful legacy for Amateur Radio and provide the long range power for ARRL to educate the next generation, to protect the valuable amateur spectrum you enjoy, to preserve the traditions and history of our service, and to ensure that Amateur Radio will be ready to provide vital public service when disaster strikes.

Your generosity and good works will leave a legacy when you remember ARRL with a bequest by will or other estate gift.

The thoughtful process of planning will help you provide for your family and express your charitable giving desires for those organizations that mean the most to you.

Estate gifts are added to the ARRL Endowment, ensuring a strong financial future for ARRL. You may designate an estate gift to one of the dedicated ARRL funds to help provide resources for specific activities you value and that are important to the future of the Amateur Radio. Or you may be choose to support the ARRL Unrestricted Operating Fund.

If you've already included a commitment to ARRL in your estate plans, thank you. When you notify the ARRL Development Officeof your estate plans you will be welcomed as a member of The ARRL Legacy Circle. We'll invite you to ARRL donor recognition events and, with your permission, recognize your legacy gift in the ARRL Annual Report, in QST and on the web, and send you updates about ARRL activities.

    Tax Law Changes Bring Opportunities

When Congress enacted the 2001 Tax Act substantial changes resulted in federal income, gift, and estate taxation. Charitable gifts continue to be fully deductible under federal tax law as well as the laws of many states. Changes to tax laws will mean that the amount of taxes paid by many Americans will be significantly reduced this year and in the future. When you review your financial situation, you may enjoy increased freedom to save, spend, and give your assets to others in ways that are more in keeping with your personal priorities.

As changes take place new opportunities emerge that can be both exciting and overwhelming. The key step is to decide how your wishes will be carried out, and then find an advisor to help you draft or revise your will or other plans to ensure that your wishes are followed. There are many creative ways you, your family and your charitable interests may benefit from tax law changes in the next few years and provide tax advantages as well.

    Legacy opportunities for fixed incomes

Many of our loyal members tell us that they owe so much to Amateur Radio but are on fixed incomes and need to limit their contributions. We certainly understand that dilemma and hope that the information we provide will present some new giving opportunities.

As you continue to consider your plans, there are many additional approaches to fulfilling your charitable wishes, including life income plans, securities, real estate, trusts or retirement plans that you may want to explore. You may want to review the following brief outlines below for different planning opportunities.

    ARRL Planned Giving Opportunities

There are many creative ways you and your advisors can plan an effective way for you to support ARRL and Amateur Radio in your estate plans. Legacy Circle gifts are added to the ARRL Endowment. Here are a few suggestions.

    Benefiting Others Through Your Will

A bequest through your will is the simplest form of gift planning.Your bequest to ARRL will go into the ARRL Endowment where it will be invested to generate maximum revenue for the programs of ARRL. You may designate a dollar amount, a percentage or the residual of your estate be donated to ARRL. You may elect to direct your bequest to a particular fund or funds in the ARRL Endowment.

Please consult your attorney to customize your will for gifts of securities, retirement plans, real estate, life insurance or other appreciated property.

    Gifts of Real Estate

You may choose to donate a gift of real estate to the ARRL. It may be land, a vacation home, a condominium or other primary residence. Such a gift should be valued by an independent appraiser of your choice, inspected and should be free of any lien or mortgage.

Real estate may be used to fund a trust or may be donated with the stipulation that you may live in the home for life, after which the property reverts to the ARRL.

In general, donations of real estate will be liquidated and the proceeds of a sale will be added to the ARRL Endowment.

    Gifts of Appreciated Property

Gifts of appreciated property such as art, jewelry, boats, automobiles etc. may be accepted by ARRL. Valuation of such property is the responsibility of the donor. Appreciated property may be used to fund a trust.

    Gifts of Radio Equipment

The families of Silent Keys often contact ARRL with a wish to contribute Amateur Radio equipment. ARRL prefers that equipment be sold and the proceeds be contributed to ARRL. Proceeds may be designated to a specific ARRL program or fund. Donors may contact local Amateur Radio clubs or equipment stores that may sell the equipment on consignment. Another option is to donate newer equipment to a local club or school that has an Amateur Radio program.

    Life Insurance Gifts

One of the easiest ways to make an estate gift to the ARRL is to make the ARRL a beneficiary of a life insurance policy.

    Gifts Through Retirement Plans

You may make ARRL the beneficiary of the residual of your retirement plan or 401(k) plan. By designating that your charitable legacy be fulfilled from the remainder of your retirement plan, you may accomplish two goals -- to fulfill your charitable intent and to realize tax benefits for your heirs.

    Charitable Trusts

You may elect to establish a charitable trust funded with cash, securities, real estate, or other appreciated property. This type of trust is irrevocable. Simply put, a charitable remainder trust provides for income to the donor, a child or other beneficiary for life or for a period of years after which ARRL would receive the remainder of the trust as a beneficiary.

A charitable lead trust provides for ARRL to benefit from the earnings of a trust established by you for a period of years, after which the principal reverts to one or more beneficiaries.
